Nighttime Vernal Pool Expedition at Shenandoah River State Park
6 pm-8pm, River Bend Discovery Center.
Deep in the forest lies the perfect salamander retreat – vernal pools. These special pools fill up each winter to provide a safe habitat for salamanders, fingernail clams, fairy shrimp, and more! Since most amphibians are nocturnal, the best time to view them is at night.
We’ll begin at the River Bend Discovery Center, discussing amphibian habitats and life cycles. Afterward, we’ll hike to the vernal pools to see how many species we can find.
All ages are welcome. The hike in and out of the vernal pool area is about a 1-mile round trip on easy to moderate terrain. We recommend that you wear old or waterproof shoes. Although we will not be getting into the vernal pools, the ground surrounding the pools might be muddy.
Throughout the Weekend
Hike and Nature Scavenger Hunt at Northern Virginia 4-H Educational and Conference Center
