Vaping can permanently damage your lungs.

Correct! Wrong!

Even if vapes or JUULs have different bad effects than traditional cigarettes, vaping still reduces lung function. Breathing in the ultra-fine particles from vaping can irritate your lungs and may start an asthma attack. Studies have shown lung cell damage from vape juice—including those that have nicotine, and the chemicals used to make the flavors.

What is the lung disease linked to vaping?

Correct! Wrong!

EVALI stands for e-cigarette or vaping use-associated lung injury. It was originally known as VAPI (vaping associated pulmonary illness). The new name is in response to a growing number of severe lung illness cases related to using e-cigarette and vaping products, the first being identified during 2019. We are still learning about this disease, so changes may continue to be made to how we talk about the disease.

Nicotine is harmful to teens’ developing brains; interfering with memory, focus and learning.

Correct! Wrong!

Nicotine can lead to addiction, which puts people at risk of becoming a lifelong smoker and exposing them to the many harmful chemicals in tobacco. These chemicals cause cancer and harm almost every organ in the body. Teens are especially sensitive to nicotine’s addictive effects because their brains are still developing and this makes it easier to get hooked. Using nicotine at as a teen can also rewire your brain to become more easily addicted to other drugs. Nicotine can have other long-lasting effects on brain development, making it harder to concentrate, learn, and control impulses.

Vaping products are currently regulated by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Correct! Wrong!

While the FDA has worked to restrict the ability for youth to buy vaping products and has succeeded in banning some flavors, they do not control the labeling or conduct the overall quality control tests for these products. Their primary goals are: preventing youth access to tobacco products, curbing the marketing of tobacco products aimed at youth and educating teens and their families about the dangers of tobacco products.

The second-hand aerosol from vaping poses no threat.

Correct! Wrong!

It’s actually aerosol, not vapor, and when it goes into the air it can be breathed in by others; similar to second hand smoke from traditional cigarette smoke. And if a pregnant person is exposed to second hand aerosol, the nicotine can affect the lung and brain development of the unborn child. It may also hurt pets, friends or family members, especially someone with asthma.

Some vape products have been found to be mislabeled as “non-nicotine” but in fact, contain nicotine.

Correct! Wrong!

Published in the July-August issue of the Journal of Pediatric Nursing, the study examined products purchased from North Dakota retail stores selling e-cigarettes. The research team noted that 23 e-liquid containers claimed to have no nicotine, but 43 percent did, in fact, contain nicotine. Levels of nicotine in those e-liquid averaged 0.19 mg/mL, with the highest level found at 0.48 mg/mL. The average cigarette has 1.1-1.8mg of nicotine. So some of the e-cig liquids have almost ½ the nicotine of one cigarette when the label says it has NO nicotine!
